Read the report that went to committee on July 5th HERE.

While cruising down the Whitemud, Terwillegar Drive or parts of 23 Avenue, you may have noticed something odd: Long grass, waving in the wind. What’s going on? Did the City forget to mow the grass?

Actually, these sites and many others are becoming naturalized. Naturalization is an ecologically-based approach to landscape management, used to transform highly maintained land to a more natural condition. In Edmonton, many green spaces like roadsides, medians, areas around stormwater ponds and other low-use parkland are in the process of being naturalized.

Naturalization doesn’t mean that the area has been left entirely to its own devices. Necessary maintenance is still performed, like noxious weed control.

The Terwillegar Park off-leash area will be closed from 9 p.m. on July 10 until 9 a.m. on July 11for herbicide application on a growth of field scabious. During this time, mostentrances to the off-leash area will be closed and enforced by park rangers. Connecting trail access to the Terwillegar Park footbridge will remain open, but park users are advised to avoid sprayed areas and stay on open trails.
