Although Edmonton is one of the youngest cities in Canada, our senior population is increasing rapidly. The number of Edmontonians aged 55 – 64 is expected to more than double over the next few decades. To help meet the needs our community’s seniors, the City of Edmonton and the South West Edmonton Seniors Association (SWESA) have partnered to offer a senior’s lounge at the Terwillegar Community Recreation Centre.
Since 2011, SWESA has been providing social, cultural and recreational programs for seniors in southwest Edmonton. Called “Coffee, Chat ‘n Cards,” the seniors lounge at Terwillegar is a drop-in program for people aged 55 or older to have coffee, socialize and engage in activities such as playing cards. As part of the partnership, SWESA delivers programming and the City of Edmonton provides space and storage.
The Terwillegar Community Recreation Centre offers a number of amenities and programs for seniors that members of the group regularly attend, including Living Fit, Walking for Health, Zumba Gold, Aquasize and Gentle Yoga.
You do not require an admission to the Terwillegar Community Recreation Centre or SWESA membership to join. In addition to coffee and chatting, the group also has a book club that runs once a month.
Community-based groups like SWESA play a vital role in our community, providing educational and recreational support and acting as a community hub. They contribute to our vision of Edmonton as a community that values, respects and actively supports the well-being of seniors.
